Eight of Alexander Girard's prints are newly available at Herman Miller and Design Within Reach.

Work has shifted from the office and into our homes, and that has necessitated designating spaces to work in peace—which is sometimes easier said than done.

And despite some companies asserting that workers will soon need to return to the office, most of us are hoping to nix the commute for the foreseeable future.

So if you’re still working on achieving that perfect home-meets-office design for your work space, you’ll be happy to know about a newly-available collection of prints by legendary midcentury textile designer Alexander Girard at Herman Miller.

During his 20-plus year tenure at Herman Miller, Girard introduced more than 300 textiles, objects and furniture. Now, eight of his designs are available for individual purchase for the first time in the form of high-quality posters.

Girard, who became founding director of the Herman Miller's textile division in 1952, wanted his designs to infuse color, joy, and creativity into the workplace. In today's multifunctional homes, his quirky designs strike the perfect balance between professional and whimsical.

"Pattern has always been the entry point into Alexander Girard's irresistibly optimistic universe," said Ben Watson, president of Herman Miller, in a statement. "His original intention was to use these prints to infuse color and energy into the workplace. In today's world, work happens everywhere, and one's home environment can be equally as creative and inspiring. These timeless designs are just as powerful as they were when introduced in 1972."

Girard created prints for everything including upholstery, wallpaper, and restaurant interiors. He was hired (along with fashion designer Emilio Pucci) to create a head-to-toe rebranding for Braniff International Airlines—a project that included orange airplanes (both inside and out) and bold, brightly-colored timetables. His aesthetic was always joyful, optimistic, and colorful.

The team at Herman Miller analyzed Girard's original screen-printed designs to pinpoint a modern medium—cotton paper—which maintains the integrity of the originals and elevates the beloved artwork for use in new ways and spaces.

The series includes eight iconic Girard patterns: Bouquet, Palace, Double Heart, and Eyes, as well as four geometric prints. The high-resolution digital prints can be purchased unframed, or framed in a natural, white, or black finish.

You can buy framed posters at Herman Miller or Design Within Reach retail locations or online, and unframed versions are available at select stores. Framed versions start at $525 and unframed at $195.
