Burnaby RCMP is teaming up with BCAA on Sunday, December 11 to educate the public on child passenger safety, with individual appointments available to help families ensure their child car seats and booster seats are properly installed.

People with appointments will be able to have their car and booster seat set-up checked by certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Educators, including Burnaby RCMP officers, who will work with attendees to offer personalized education, guidance, and feedback.

The initiative will take place in the north west parking lot near Walmart at the City of Lougheed Shopping Centre in Burnaby between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 11, 2022.

Burnaby RCMP is asking attendees to pre-book appointments online. If you are interested, please send an email here.

For a child's car seat or booster seat to be effective, it must be installed correctly.

We often hear from parents and families that setting up a car seat or booster seat can be complicated, intimidating, and confusing. Whether it's installation, adjustments, or education that you need assistance with, our team is here to help, said Cst. Kevin Connolly with Burnaby RCMP Traffic Services.

Officers will be able to identify safety issues during these appointments, and can also help families choose another appropriate car or booster seat option if needed, as well as assisting with installation and education.

Burnaby RCMP is encouraging families to bring their current car or booster seat as well as their children to their pre-booked appointment, as it will allow officers to ensure the seat is installed correctly with the child properly seated and strapped in.

This is Burnaby RCMP's second car and booster seat safety initiative.

We had great feedback from our first-ever event in September. Some of our attendees included new parents, and even a grandfather getting a car seat ready so he could pick up his newborn grandchild from the hospital, Cst. Connolly added. We encourage anyone needing a bit of help to make an appointment, as car and booster seats are an important part of road safety and protecting young passengers.
